Also gallery label from \‘Beside the Wave\’ of Falmouth verso. 23cm x 17.5cm. Framed.Joan Gillchrest was one of the best known naive painters of Cornwall of the twentieth century. Hailing from an illustrious family (neé Joan Gilbert Scott, her great-grandfather George was the architect of St Panras Station while her uncle, Sir Giles, designed Battersea and Bankside power stations - the latter now Tate Modern - as well as the iconic red telephone box) she studied art in London before moving to Cornwall in the late 1950s. 37.5 x 50.5cm.; 14.75 x 20in. * Trained under Iain Macnab at Grosvenor School of Modern Art and in Paris. In 1958 she moved to Cornwall. From before the war she had begun to exhibit in mixed company,

over the years showing with the Royal Academy; London Group; New English Art Club and Whitechapel Art Gallery. Also showed in Cornwall at Newlyn Orion Gallery,

Penzance and Wills Lane Gallery,

St Ives and she was included in Artists from Cornwall at the Royal West of England Academy,

1992. Had solo shows at Plymouth City Art Gallery,

1969; Newlyn Orion in 1973-6; Bodmin Fine Arts,

1974-8 and Windsor Fine Arts,

1978.
