Description:
Abstract in brown and white, (recto) abstract in red and blue,(verso); oil on canvas, signed and dated 51, 45.3x32cm, Note:Painter and sculptor. He was one of the few British artists tofully embrace the avante garde movement in Paris in the 1950s. Hestudied architecture at the Slade School of Art in London from 1929to 1932, where he befriended fellow student Roger Hilton. Gilbertwon the Slade Scholarship at the end of his first year, and theprincipal Sir Henry Tonks encouraged him to start painting from1930. He also met sculptor Jocelyn Chewett at the Slade, and theywere married in 1935.
