matteo dei pitocchi, called il ghidoni padua 1626 - circa 1689 the annunciation to the shepherds; the nativity; the massacre of the innocents; the conversion of saul a set of four, all oil on canvas (4) each: 74 by 56.2 cm.; 29 by 22 in. the artist's sobriquet derives from his characteristic depiction of beggars and poor people ('pitocchi') within his compositions. he specialised principally in genre scenes and religious scenes and a number of his works can still be seen in his native padua today (see c. donzelli & g.m. pilo, i pittori del seicento veneto, florence 1967, pp.332-34, pl. 364-67, with reproductions).
