Wojciech Gerson (1831 - 1901)
Painter and professor. Finished Warsaw Fine Art. Academy with honorable mention and received scolarship for St. Petersburg Fine Art. Academy, where he studied in 1853-1855 under A.T. Markov, in historical painting class. After graduation with silver medal, he returned to Warsaw. In 1850 he left to Paris where he studied under Leon Cognet and in various museums. Since 1858 Gerson stayed in Warsaw. He was cofounder of famous Fine Arts Society (Zacheta) in Warsaw. Since 1865 he taught painting and drawing in his own workshop, creating several generations of future famous Polish artists like Chelmonski, Wyczolkowski, Stanislawski, Podkowinski, Pankiewicz. Gerson maintained contacts with St.Petersburg Academy, sending his works to exhibitions, that succeeded of receiving the title of „Academic” (member of the Academy),and in 1878 he was granted the title of the Academy professor.. Gerson also worked as architect, made decorative wall paintings, stage decorations and was also known as critic and art. journalist. He is renown of his series of patriotic paintings, country life scenes and Tatra’’s mountains landscapes.
