A self-taught artist associated with the art life of Boston in the second half of the nineteenth century, Samuel Lancaster Gerry was a cofounder in 1854 of the Boston Art Club, and taught many artists including J. Frank Currier. Although he painted portraits and figure pieces, he is best known for his landscapes of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Rendered in the transcriptive mode of the Hudson River School, works such as Calm Pond reflect the influence on Gerry of the work of Durand, while demonstrating his proclivity for restorative and serene places of natural beauty. As a writer stated in the artist's obituary in the Critic: "Mr. Gerry was ever an ardent lover of the beautiful in this world, and with his intense religious feeling almost worshipped nature as a glorious creation of God." (May 2, 1891)

Estimate $1,500-2,500
Not relined but with a squarish patch on verso, approx. 2 3/8 x 2 inches. Under u.v. light this painting is difficult to accurately 'read' due to the varnish inconsistencies and pigments used. Even over the patched area we do not see evidence on front of canvas of major restoration. There is also some visible craquelure. Overall, we think the painting is in generally good condition.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
