(1837-1928 Mount Vernon, NY) ''Spring Time, Arlington Valley, VA.'', pastoral landscape with sheep, oil on canvas, 16'' H x 24'' W, est: $1800/2200 signed lower left: Edward Gay, titled on a frame plaque. Provenance: Private Collection, Huntington Beach, CA. Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Fine craquelure scattered throughout. Stretcher bar creases along the four edges. The canvas is slightly loose and rippled. Blacklight: A 1.75'' x .5'' area of touch-up lower left below the signature. A few small spots of touch-up along the upper center edge.

Edward B. Gay (American, 1837-1928) Coastal Scene , c. 1880 Signed "EDWARD GAY" l.r., identified on a label from Berry-Hill Galleries, New York, affixed to the backing. Oil on canvas, 28 x 40 in. (71.1 x 101.6 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Sotheby's Arcade, American 19th and 20th Century Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, September 22, 1987, Sale 1214, Lot 92. The lining is adhered with wax. There is a long narrow band of retouch just above the horizon on the left side of the composition plus additional scattered dots and dashes of retouch. The craquelure is stable. The scene is purportedly a view of Newburyport, Massachusetts, from Old Point Road on Plum Island.
