William Gaunt (1900-1980) Princes Square, Whitechapel pen and black ink, with blue and green ink wash, signed and inscribed at lower right, hinged intomount, this erroneously captioned Queens Square, Whitechapel, 1932, 21.5 x 25 cm (8 1/2 x 93/4 in) *** Princes Square, now known as SwedenborgGardens, London E1, was the site of the UlrikaEleanora Church attended by the philosopher and visionary, Emanuel Swedenborg after he arrived in London fromStockholm, in 1710. The church closed in 1910 and wasdemolished in 1921. This stark scene depicts figures playingfootball by a lone floodlight in the barren looking centralgarden.

He studied at Westminster School of Art under Walter Bayes and Bernard Meninsky before going on to exhibit at the RA, Redfern Gallery and Lefevre Gallery, as well as several one-man shows.
