Description:
50. GARNERAY, Ambroise-Louis (1783-1857). Vue De New York, Prise de Weahawk (A Viewof New-York, Taken from Weahawken). Paris: circa 1834.Aquatint printed in colors and finished by hand. Sheet size: 17 1/4x 20 1/4 in. Second state with the imprint "A Paris chez Hocquartaine Succr de Basset rue St. Jacques No. 64. Depose. New-YorkPublished by Bailly Ward & Co.". One of the most beautiful aquatint views of NewYork. Weahawk in New Jersey (now Weehawken) offered NewYorkers a pastoral retreat and was a popular picnic area, with aferry running from Canal Street. Burr and Hamilton fought theirfamous duel there, and years later the first baseball games wereplayed at a site nearby. "The date of Garneray's rendering is determined…by the inclusion ofthe dome of the Old Merchants' Exchange, completed in 1827 butdestroyed by fire in December 1835. It can be seen to the left ofTrinity Church in the lower reaches of Manhattan…[and] becausethere is no trace of the elaborate tower of the Presbyterian Churchin Wall Street, destroyed by fire in September of 1834 but rebuiltin 1835, it is probable that the drawing for the aquatint was madelate in 1834 or early in 1835." He later took a position as an apprentice on the frigate La Forte and traveled to Mauritius and Madagascar. Upon his return to France in 1814, Garneray was appointed marine painter to Louis de Bourbon, Duc d'Angoulême. In this role the artist travelled extensively along the French coast and was even sent to Greece, where he painted a work entitled The Battle of Navarino (Musée du Château du Versailles, Paris). It is possible that the present painting depicts one of the many ports, such as those in Mauritius, that Garneray visited. This lot is sold subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Sale. Description:
Ambroise-Louis Garneray (1783-1857) A panorama of Portsmouth harbour with hulks in line ahead and the fleet at anchor, including warships of the American and Spanish navies oil on canvas 19½ x 38 7/8 in. (50 x 98.7 cm.) Born in Paris in 1783, Ambroise-Louis Garneray entered the French Navy at the age of 13, serving in the Indian Ocean on La Confiance. Whilst serving on the Atalante, in 1805, he was shipwrecked off the Cape of Good Hope and was transferred to the frigate Belle Poule which was captured the following year. He was confined to the prison hulk Prothée in Portsmouth Harbour and remained a prisoner until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814. Whilst a prisoner of war, he began to paint portraits, but in 1812 he was moved ashore to a parole area. It was then that he executed a series of views of Portsmouth harbour from the north, with prison hulks in line in the foreground, of which this is an example. In 1813, he escaped, but was recaptured in the Channel by the Vengeance and consequently spent his last few months stripped of all privileges. After his release, he became a professional marine painter, exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1817. In 1852 was created a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
