oil on panel, unframed
20.3 x 30.5cm (8 x 12in).
PROVENANCE :
Private collection, U.K.
Robert Gallon was a painter mainly of landscapes throughout England, Scotland and Wales and exhibited 32 pictures at the Royal Academy and 27 at the British Institution. He painted in a realistic style similar to Benjamin Williams Leader.
Henry John Yeend King was a late 19th century painter of pretty girls in country settings and exhibited 93 pictures at the Royal Academy. In 1898 (the year after our picture was painted), his picture
Milking Time
was bought by the Tate Gallery.
Yeend King was married to the sister of Robert Gallon's wife, so presumably this picture was painted at a family gathering and this beautiful, fluid picture has added immediacy from having been painted 'en pleine air'.
