PORTRAIT OF VAN GOGH
An oil on canvas portrait of a man painted in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.
Signed lower left, 'By Clarence Gagnon/ After Van Gogh.' Two Walter Klinkhoff Gallery labels on verso authenticating the work and stating, 'This sketch in the manner of Van Gogh was done by Clarence Gagnon as a divertissement, and formed part of Madame Gagnon's estate.' Framed.
Gagnon studied at the Art Association of Montreal in 1897 under William Brymner. After travelling in Europe and studying at the Acadèmie Julian in France, Gagnon returned to Canada to become a member of the RCA. Gagnon was greatly influenced by Impressionism and brought the style of the movement to his depictions of the rural Quebec landscape.
