Franz Frank - Building The Breakwater

Other WORKS AT AUCTIONDescription:
oil on board signed and on verso signed and titled 30 x 43 in 76.2 x 109.2cm Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto Literature: Roger Burford Mason, A Grand Eye for Glory: A Life of Franz
Johnston, 1998, page 12 Johnston's inclusion in the seminal Group of Seven exhibition in
1920 was, ironically, the impetus for him to subsequently hone and
develop his own style apart from the Group. Johnston "professed his
desire to paint the Canadian landscape the way he saw it, and not
through the filter of any particular ideology. He had his own vision
to pursue." Building the Breakwater is a testament to that vision.
Johnston deliberately forgoes the use of the gestural brush-stroke,
so readily identifiable with the Group, and adheres to a more
realistic approach. His keen attention to detail is evident in the
execution of the horse, and the differentiation of the raw earth
from stones, which is only matched by the brilliant contrast in
colour tonalities. The viewer can almost sense the temperature as
the bright sunlight pierces through the breeze of a cool, crisp,
late fall day. In this painting there is a narrative with man, as
opposed to the land, as the chosen protagonist. As Mason's book on
Johnston so aptly states, he had a "grand eye for glory
".
