Sale: Sotheby's Arcade Auctions, New York, Oct. 25,1985, lot 138 C Property of a Greenwich Village Collector Estimate $8,000-12,000 Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Could use a cleaning. There is a 4 1/2 inch vertical repaired tear in the buildings and the wall to the water at the center right. There is some scattered touches of inpaint in the water and the buildings reflections in the water at the lower right quadrant. There is no visible restoration under UV light. Showing the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame of Mantes-la-Jolie (thirty miles west of Paris), from across the Seine, this watercolor demonstrates Boggs's adept use of subtle tonalities to create atmospheric effects and his ability to transcribe scenes accurately, while keeping detail to a minimum.
