(25.7 x 46.8 cm.) Pre-Lot Text THE PROPERTY OF A LADY (lots 419-427) Lot Notes Michel François Préault was considered by his contemporaries asone of the most popular topographical artists of his age. He wasvery much appreciated by the Ottoman court, first arriving inIstanbul in 1796 where he remained until the end of 1798. He thentravelled to Athens to work as the personal painter for the Britishclassicist John Tweddel who was touring Greece at the time. Préaultstayed on for some time in Athens, creating souvenir views forforeign visitors. He then returned to Istanbul where he remaineduntil 1827. He supplied illustrations for various popular travelbooks such as: -E.D. Clarke, Travels, London 1810-1823 -Atlas des promenades pittoresques dans Constantinople et sur lesrives du Bosphore par M. Michel-François Préault (French, 1787-1927) L'interieur de l'Eglise à Nazareth inscribed with the title (lower edge) pen and ink on paper, unframed 8¾ x 13¼ in. (22.2 x 33.9 cm.) and a pen and ink drawing depicting the Convent at Nazareth by the same hand two in the lot (2) It has been suggested that the artist may have depicted himself in the centre of the composition.
