gabriel riqueti comte de mirabeau (1749-1791), orator and revolutionary statesman, was elected to the estates general of marseilles in 1780. his political acumen made him a force in the national assembly. as the popular movement progressed, his views were rejected by the revolutionaries, who later accused him of treason. he delivered a speech before the national assembly, in 1789, in his own defence. he died soon after being elected president of the assembly in 1791. this statuette is a small version of the large statue standing in aix-en-provence. brown patina, finely cast and chiselled, the standing mirabeau is depicted in the act of delivering a political speech, extending his left hand in the gesture of adlocutio and holding his right hand on a stand behind him, on a square base signed f. trupheme scpt.
