LEONOR FINI
La Femme Drapée d'Orange.
Watercolor, pastel and charcoal on paper. 820x770 mm; 32 1/4x30 1/4 inches, sheet. Signed in brown ink, lower right recto.
Argentinian born, Fini (1907-1996) spent her youth in Italy before pursuing an art career in Paris in her twenties. There she quickly became an active member of the Surrealist movement, fostering close relationships with a number of fellow artists, including Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, and André Breton. Known not only for consistently exhibiting to critical acclaim but also for her flamboyant personality, Fini's emphasis on dreams, fantasy, and the deconstruction of perceived reality permeated her art as well as her life. One of Fini's most notable contributions to Surrealism is her representation of women. While fantastical, her subjects are always compelling and unapologetically in control, such as the main figure in La Femme Drapée d'Orange.
