LIU, FENG ZHI
(Heilongjiang 1964)
Tian An Men.
Oil on canvas. 2004. signed.
60 x 50 cm.
For years, Liu Fengzhi has been a hopeless idealist. That is why to him 'I love Beijing's Tian'an- Men Square' type of collectivism complex and connotation of ideology is not the product of naïve opportunism but a stimulant of scene recording based on the stipulation of personal spiritual development, and that lead to his complex feelings when he has to define again self value and the meaning of existence after the loss of spiritual homeland. Tian'anmen Square, which is apt to become a target for nationalism and post-colonial culture to relieve their feelings, remain the subject of his scenery series, but the context is stealthily transformed. Free strokes with pure hues, these are compressed into a more and more flatter space, and therefore the works are shrouded by a fantastic and surrealistic atmosphere. Obviously, guided by a fundamental spiritual schema, Liu creates with ease one picture after another, with wit and enjoying himself. Painting has almost become a world where the artist forgets himself.
