Description:
Alastair James Fagan Morton (1910-1963) Abstract composition in blue and white Oil on board, 28.5cm by 33.5cm Provenance: From the artist's family Alistair James Fagan Morton was born in Carlisle on 12th February 1910. He started work in the family textile manufacturing business Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd in 1931, before moving to Edinburgh Weavers. It is his design success through the Edinburgh Weavers for which Morton gained public recognition. Morton commissioned designs from Lucienne Day RDI, Duncan Grant RDI and Ashley Havinden RDI, he produced a range of ''constructivist'' fabrics. Mortons interest in the arts started when he began buying modernist works including Mondrian and Léger, as well as a number of works by Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Artistically he was a member of a small group in pre-war Britain to champion abstract art in the modernist style. His paintings were exhibited at ''Living Art England'', the London Gallery and at ''Abstract Paintings by Nine British Artists'' held at the Lefevre Gallery. Morton died aged 53 from heart failure, having been plagued by ill health throughout his life. His lifetime achievements were celebrated after his death when in March 1964, the Duke of Edinburgh presented a posthumous Award for Achievement in recognition of ''the absolute integrity which he projected into his work, and for his steadfast conviction that the arts can be successfully enlisted by commerce''.
