MAURITS C. ESCHER Ascending and Descending. Lithograph on smooth, cream wove paper, 1960. 365x294 mm; 14 1/2x11 5/8 inches, full margins. Signed and inscribed "No. 11/56 IV" in pencil, lower right. A superb, evenly-printed impression with all the tonal nuances distinct. The "never-ending" staircase on the roof of this imaginary building is based on a geometric model by the mathematician L. S. Penrose. Bool 435.

Maurits Cornelis Escher 1898 - 1972 DAY AND NIGHT (BOOL/KIST/LOCHER/WIERDA 303) Woodcut printed in black and gray, 1938, signed in pencil, inscribed 'eigen druk', on Japan paper, framed image: 392 by 677 mm 15 1/2 by 26 3/4 in sheet: 420 by 757 mm 16 5/8 by 29 7/8 in The print is in good conditon, a fine impression with wide margins. Unobtrusive pale yellow discoloration and several inconspicuous fox marks in the upper left corner. The verso, with three hinge remnants on the top sheet edge showing through to the recto. (Printed from two blocks, the join can appear as a dark vertical line in the center of the image. This mark is not present in this impression). In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. ESCHER Maurits Cornelis nato a Leekwarden nel 1898 e morto a Hilversum nel 1972.
Disegnatore e incisore olandese, studiò arte grafica sotto la guida dell'olandese S.
Jessurun de Mesquita, dopodiche compì un viaggio in Spagna, dove eseguì i primi disegni di mosaici dell'Alhambra di Granada, poi fu in Italia, i cui paesaggi del sud ricorrono spesso nelle sue opere.
Partì dall'accurata restituzione della realtà, poi subì l'influenza da studi di tipologia e cristallografia e spostò i propri interessi sulle divisioni periodiche del piano, cominciando a rappresentare "immagini mentali" più o meno complesse.
Passò da figure geometriche elementari, a figure zoomorfe che grazie a effetti optical ed a contorni ambivalenti trapassano le une nelle altre in surreali metamorfosi.
Basò le sue famose litografie e xilografie sulla rappresentazione di prospettive illusorie e su strutture tridimensionali impossibili, ma costruite secondo una logica ferrea.
Tra le sue opere: "Castrovalva", "Abruzzi", "Costa amalfitana", "Verbum", "Rettili" e "Incontro".
