When he was young Henryk Epstein was tightly connected with theJewish art society in Lodz. He most probably received his firstpainting and drawings lesson at the Jakub Kacenbogen drawingschool. Around 1910, for a brief period, the artist studied inMunich. From the year 1912 he live in Paris, where he studied atthe Acadèmie de la Grande Chaumière. He lived at Montparnasse, inthe so called „La Ruche” where he joined the local artists group.Epstein was friends with, among others, A.Modigliani, Ch.Soutin,M.Chagall, J.Paskin, M.Utrill. From year 1921 the artist exhibitedat French Salons – Independent Salon (1921-1923, 1925, 1928),Autumn Salon (1921), Tuileries Salon (1927-1931). In 1944 Epsteinwas taken by the Germans to a prisoner camp and then presumably toAuschwitz. Epstein painted landscapes, still natures, nudes andfigural compositions. He also worked with book illustrations(Vagabondages G. Coquiot, Les Rois du marquis B.Bonardi).
