JOHN EDWIN FORBES (American, 1839-1895) LAKE VIEW. Oil on canvas scene shows a sailboat moored alongside a small inlet with grass covered bank with small trees. Another sailboat can be seen in the distance. All under a cloudy sunset sky. Signed lower left with initials in script. The back having a Kirk's Wheeling West Virginia framing label. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 9" x 18". CONDITION: Very good with some discolored varnish. 9-20417 (2,000-3,000)

(British, 1841-1895), titled verso canvas "After the Storm…Flamborough", two figures on a beach, distant ship and chalk cliffs, signed lower right "E. Ellis", oil on canvas, 24 x 40 in.; original gilt wood and composition frame with frame plate. Retouch upper right and possibly through center of sky in areas of blue/gray, some crackle, canvas loose; frame with abrasions.

Edwin Ellis (1841-1895), Estuary scene with cattle watering, signed and dated 92, oil on canvas, 50 x 75cm.; 19.75 x 29.5in. * Exhibited at the Royal Academy, but more often at the Society of British Artists-Suffolk Street where he showed nearly 100 works. Subjects mostly coastal views in Yorkshire, Wales and Cornwall. In 1893 a comprehensive exhibition of his work was held at the Nottingham Museum.
