Eljasz-Radzikowski, Walery Krakau 1841 - 1905 Death of Stanislav Zolkiewski in the battle of Cecora 1620/21. Signed and dated centre bottom: Walery Eljasz 1876 Krakowje. Oil on canvas. 106 x 145cm. The Ottoman-polish war 1620/21 was conducted between the Ottoman empire and Poland/Lithuanian to settle the rule over Danubian principalities. Stanislav Zolkiewski (1547-1620)was an influencial polish-lithuanian Szlachcic, commander and politician. On the 7th of October 1620 Zolkiewski was killed during the polish retreat after the Battle of Cecora. His chopped-off head was delivered to the Sultan in Constantinople as war memorial. Legends described him as christian Knight who fell in the battle against the hedonists to protect the holy Faith.
