The printhas a dimension of c. 37 x 25.2 cm. CHOBUNSAI Eishi (1756-1829) CHOBUNSAI Eishi, born under the name Hosoda Tokitomi, was aJapanese ukiyo-e artist and was descended from a wealthy samuraifamily. He studied painting at the Kano school under KanōMichinobu, which probably gave him the name Eishi. His earliestworks were color nishiki-e prints, with literary motifs, such as ‘The Tale of Genji’’’’, as well as portraits of beautiful women, ofwhich he produced a number of series. Occasionally he also designedillustrations for Shunga Erotic books. Eishi was so successful thathas been awarded the title Jibukyō and his works were included inthe collection of the Empress Go-Sakuramachi in the 1800’’’’s.

Chobunsai Eishi (1756-1829) Color woodcuts: two prints of beauties, one entitled Tamaya Hanamurasaki dochu no zu (The courtesan Hanamurasaki of the Tamaya brothel strolling) at night, indicated by the dark mica ground, from the series Seiro bijin awase (Collected beauties of the Yoshiwara), signed [Chobun]sai Eishi giga (designed for pleasure) and published by Iwatoya Kisaburo; and a design of a beauty representing the daughter of Taira no Kiyomori using a mirror to draw her self-portrait to send to her mother (Kiyomori sokujo no ga jizo o utsushi haha ni kore o okuru zu), signed Eishi zu and published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo)--second print good impression, both quite faded, stained, the first heavily creased and soiled, second stained and with hole at bottom oban tate-e: 15¼ x 9¾in.
