Description:
François Eisen (1695-1778)
Self-portrait of the artist in his studio, holding a mahl-stick, painting an allegorical scene
Oil on panel

Signed lower left

28.5 x 25.5 cm. (11 1/4 x 10 in)

Born in Brussels around 1685, Eisen moved to Valenciennes in Northern France at the age of twenty. It was here that Eisen embarked on numerous commissions for the churches and monastic instituions of the region. In 1745 Eisen moved to Paris, where he stayed until his death.[1] We have been unable to find any historical references to a known self-portrait by the artist, but it would appear to be without too much doubt that the present work is a self-portrait, and one of the artist in his studio. The studio is filled with fine examples of contemporary furniture, historical curios, and the objects of a collector one would presume to have been exposed to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity; while we have been unable to confirm whether Eisen travelled to Italy, the influence and interests common among many 18th century Grand Tourists is clearly apparent.

Dictionary of Painters and Engravers,

London, 1886, vol.I , pp.475-476
Panel with repaired horizontal split, 3/5 towards the top of panel. Small loss to panel upper right corner. Some rubbing and surface dirt. Would benefit from a light clean, and possibly further restoration.
