Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
LATE MING EARLY QING DYNASTY (LATE 17TH EARLY 18TH CENTURY),
A CHINESE BRONZE ARCHAISTIC BUFFALO-FORM CENSER,
Add. Notes: with fitted wood stand 6½in. (16.5cm.) highNotes: This painting will be included in the Weeks catalogue raisonné, currently being prepared by Dr Ellen K. Morris. Edwin Lord Weeks was born in Boston, but from an early age set out to explore the world and portray what he saw for Western audiences. The most famous Orientalist painter in the late-nineteenth-century expatriate community in Paris, Weeks travelled to Morocco, Persia, the Middle East and India. First shown at the Paris Salon in 1878, his work was frequently exhibited throughout Europe and America from 1876 to 1904. In 1896 he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, the Salon's highest distinction. Weeks also gained fame as a travel writer, describing his exotic adventures in magazines where his narratives were often accompanied by his sketches. Weeks' first trip to Palestine took place in 1872, and it was likely at this time that he painted , probably in situ, as was his preference. Very few paintings survive from this early stage of Weeks' career, and it is especially rare to come across one on this large scale. The artist ably depicts the Temple Mount, while also conveying his interest in, and affinity for, his Orientalist subject matter.
