Notes
This
portrait of a girl shares many qualities with other works
attributed to Gerardus Duyckinck I (1695-1746). The striking
full-length portrait shows a young girl of about two years, wearing
a vivid blue silk gown and red shoes. She is shown standing beside
a table strewn with flowers, which complement the color of her
dress as well as the red draperies behind her. The white marble
table and the classical columns flank the figure, and the landscape
between the columns provide an illusion of depth to the
canvas.
Other paintings attributed Duyckinck share similar features that
are exhibited in the present lot. Of particular interest are the
celebrated portraits of the Franks children, circa 1735, a series
of portraits that were until recently in the collection of the
American Jewish Historical Society. Stylistically, The Girl in a
Blue dress shares some conventions with the Levy-Franks portraits,
most notably in the classical architecture, the red and blue draped
fabrics, and the attention to detail in the flowers (Lot 721, fig.
1 and Lot 722, fig. 1)
