WANG DUO (1592-1652) Return from Fishing Fan leaf, mounted and framed, ink on gold-flecked paper 17.8 x 54 cm. (7 x 21 1/4 in.) Inscribed and signed, with one seal of the artist Dedicated to Yuehan Dated yichou year (1649) 1 PREVIOUSLY IN THE COLLECTION OF KEIKOKU GEJO Originally named Masao, Keikoku Gejo (1842-1920) was a painter of the Japanese Kano school. In 1879 he founded the Ryuchikai, precursor of the present Japan Art Association. In 1883 he held art exhibitions in Paris. A celebrated painter during the Meiji era, Gejo was principal of the navy accounting school from 1892 to 1893 and became Member of the House of Peers in 1897. He was highly respected as a great collector of Chinese and Japanese classical paintings and calligraphy. Part of his collection had been published in important art books and some pieces were registered national treasure.

LOT 644 WANG DUO 1592-1652 POEM IN RUNNING SCRIPT signed Wang Duo, dated xinmao (1651), the fifth lunar month, with a dedication, and with one seal of the artist, qing gong tai bao. Titleslip and colophon by Yu Jinhe, both signed Yu Jinhe, the latter dated jiawu (1954), the twenty-fourth day of the first lunar month, and with two seals of his, yu jin he (2) ink on satin, hanging scroll 185.1 by 53 cm. 72 7/8 by 20 7/8 in.
