A Gray Racehorse in a Landscape
, 1851
Signed
Dunn
Oil on canvas
24 3/4 x 30 inches (63 x 76.2 cm)
Provenance:
George Hesketh Biggs (1823-1901), Upton Warren, Worcestershire, England
By inheritance to his son, Harcourt Galton Biggs (1862-1917) of Upton Warren and later, Richmond, California
Bequeathed to his son, Reginald Harcourt Biggs (1900-1984), Mountain View, CA
By inheritance to the present owner
According to family tradition, George Hesketh Biggs won this painting in a bet on the racehorse shown.
Not lined. Surface scrape 1 inch long in the lower left corner. Canvas rippling in the upper righty corner. Surface darkened from what appears to be deposited residue from tobacco smoke. No restoration visible under UV light. This is in estate condition --- that is, unlined, and with the exception of the scrape at lower left, the surface is very sound. The painting would benefit from judicious cleaning and restretching.
