Lot Notes
The present watercolour is a study for Rossetti's painting Found(Bancroft Collection, Wilmington, Delaware; Surtees, no. 64, pl.65), commissioned in 1853, worked on periodically over many years, but still incomplete when the artist died in 1882. Rossetti's onlyattempt at a 'modern moral' subject, the picture shows a youngfarmer encountering a prostitute with whom he has formally beeninvolved, now an outcast living on the London streets. The watercolour is almost certainly the one mentioned by G.P. Boycein his diary on 26 November 1869: 'He (Rossetti) showed me anexcellent drawing that Dunn had been making for him from a windowoverlooking London Bridge at dawn'. Dunn was Henry Treffry Dunn,Rossetti's assistant, and it is no doubt significant that Rossettirecommenced work on the picture that year, when the commission wastaken over by his patron William Graham. Indeed, by 24 December1869 Rossetti was reporting to Frederic Sheilds that he had 'madeconsiderable way towards the bridge background'. Dunn's authorship of the drawing is confirmed by comparison withother examples of his work in watercolour, but the topography isopen to question. Rossetti intended to locate his subject at thenorth end of Blackfriars Bridge, not far from the lodgings heoccupied at 14 Chatham Place from 1852 to 1862; and both VirginiaSurtees and Stephen Wildman, (in the catalogue of the Waking Dreamsexhibition) have suggested that Boyce was mistaken in identifyingthe drawing as a view of London Bridge. However, Alastair Grievehas pointed out that Blackfriars Bridge as Rossetti had known itwas pulled down and rebuilt in the 1860s, and he may 'have feltthat the more old-fashioned London Bridge fitted better with hisoriginal conception than the new Blackfriars Bridge'. Dunn is usually credited with having worked on the background ofFound after Rossetti's death, so he may have made further use ofthe drawing at this date.

As can be seen through the bold similarity in style, Dunn was an
art assistant to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who once told him, "You
are the best of fellows and my guardian angel". When the Uffizi
asked Rossetti's brother to provide a portrait of Dante, he sent
one painted by Dunn.

CATALOGUE NOTE
The Cornish artist Henry Treffry Dunn worked as Dante Gabriel Rossetti's personal secretary and studio assistant in Rossetti's later years at Tudor House in Chelsea. He completed some of Rossetti's unfinished works, painted replicas of paintings for commissions that Rossetti himself was not able to complete and also painted a number of paintings in Rossetti's style. The present picture is very close in style to a series of panels painted for the casement of a remarkable folding bed painted for Theodore Watts Dunton's House, The Pines in Putney (now at Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton). Girl with a Psaltery relates to Rossetti's chalk drawing entitled Forced Music (also known as Violante) although in Rossetti's composition, the model, said to have been Watts Dunton's mistress, is nude.
