Description:
Lot 12 BRIAN JAMES DUNLOP (1938-2009) “Room Interior with Fruit and Flowers on a Draped Table” Oil on Canvas 163x120cm Signed Lower Left Prov: Private Collection, Adelaide Room interior with fruit and flowers on a draped table This painting has a prosaic, rather fastidiously descriptive name. There is no room for interpretation. Brian Dunlop was a very careful, very thorough and extremely skilled painter. He was one of the great portraitists of Australia, immaculate in his representations. He earned some 90 commissions, including Queen Elizabeth in 1984. But, as one who had won art prizes from the time he was a Sydney schoolboy, his subjects were wide-ranging, often reflecting the years he lived in Tuscany. This painting reflects the impeccable purity of his style and his exquisite sense of shape and colour. Not only is it an interior which takes the eye through to the daylight outside but also it is a still life suggesting a domesticity of refinement and generosity. Then there is the imposing Indian miniature painting on the wall, the painting within the painting. It tells a story of its own, of the householders and their urbanity. This is the house of travelled, educated, and elegant people. The meticulous simplicity of the work reminds one that Dunlop has been heralded as one of the country’s most recognisable realist painters. He won the Sulman prize in 1980 and his works are held by major national and state galleries.
