Description:
Edward Duncan (London 1803-1882) A town in an estuary at low tide signed and dated 'E. Duncan/1868' (lower left) pencil and watercolour with gum arabic heightened with touches ofbodycolour 17¾ x 24 in. (45 x 61 cm.)
It has not been possible to identify the location depicted inthe present watercolour but by examining works executed by Duncanaround 1868 when it was executed (such as views in Scotland of LochTorridon and Tantallon Castle, and in Wales of Harlech Castle), itseems that it was probably executed near one of these locations.Duncan is celebrated for his successful marine views, oftendepicting wrecks out in howling gales, but also capturing thefisherfolk and beachcombers in more peaceful settings.
