Lot number: 94
Daniel Dumonstier
(Paris 1574-1646)

A portrait of ayoung woman in a ruffled collar,

black chalk andpastel,

on paper,

26 x 19.2 cm,

a stripof paper added,

Provenance: Europeanprivate collection. Daniel Dumonstier was a French painter anddraughtsman at the courts of Catherine of Medici,

Henri IVand Louis XIII; he was the most famous member of an extensiveartists\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ family. He enjoyed great favour among the Parisiannoble society; a considerable number of his drawings has survivedin different collections,

the majority of them ispreserved in the graphic collections of the Louvre and theBibliothèque Nationale de France. His portrait style,
which presented his contemporaries with high fidelity,
recalls partly the conception of Dutch Realists,
however they lack their characteristic monumentality. On thecontrary,

he rendered his portraits by adding delicatepastels to a preliminary sketch in black chalk, thus arriving at anelegant beauty and nobility in his portraits. The heads wereusually more carefully ececuted than the other parts,
which he only indicated with a few strokes. The present drawingwas roughly sketched with charcoal and then filled out with pastel. The identy of the sitter is unknown.
