Dullah studied painting with Affandi and Sudjojono and is wellknown as an educator and a proponent of Indonesian Revolution.During the late 1940s, he started documenting the IndonesianRevolution and depicted the struggle and the fight of therevolutionaries through his paintings and relentless propagated thecause as an artist and as a proud Indonesians. Depicting a youngerSoekarno in his prime who is clearly engaging his crowd with hisfiery and motivational rhetoric, Dullah managed to recreate asignificant moment in history when Bung Karno (as the FirstPresident of Indonesia is fondly known by the people) unified thedifferent groups amongst the revolutionaries to work against asingle enemy - the Dutch colonial authority. The present composition is a study of a larger oeuvre which isnoted on the reverse of the painting. In the 1950s, Dullah was madethe official palace painter for Soekarno and he also became thefirst curator of Soekarno's art collection and coordinated thepublication of the first edition of the collection's catalogue in1956. It is evident that the artist held great deal of respect forSoekarno, both for the president's charisma as a political leaderand his genuine love for art which the artist expresses unabashedlywith the present composition.

Lot Notes
Painting in a time when the 'People's Artists' (notablyrepresented by Affandi, Sudjojono and Hendra) were propounding amovement against the Mooie Indie (Beautiful Indies) school ofpaintings that idealised and romanticised the Dutch East Indies tomere 'beautiful women in dancing postures and elaborate headdressesand majestic landscapes', Dullah was steadfast to his artisticinspirations.
Painted numerous portraits of the people of Indonesia which includethe old and young, the beautiful and the ordinary, Dullah is verymuch inspired by the 'beauty' of the landscape as seen by the Dutchmasters which are perceived as exotically distorted impressions bythe 'People's artists'. The present lot is of an uncommonly largesize that allows the presentation of a grand procession in Bali. The earthy tone of the work which mingles a mixture of greenish andyellowish tones conveys an atmospheric mood of nostalgic longingand sobriety, befitting the occasion.
