Description:
- Alexander Davidovich Drevin 1889-1938 Armenian Landscape Oil on canvas 67 x 70,5 cm. PROVENANCE European collection Drevin attended art school in Riga from 1908 to 1913, specialising in landscapes, and moved to Moscow the following year, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He moved into the realm of abstract painting and was active in a circle of artists that included Falk, Lentulov and Rodchenko. He married fellow artist Nadezhda Udaltsova, and they both were members of the Institute of Artistic Culture (InKhuk) from 1920-1921, until leaving with Kandinsky and Kliun as the Constuctivists-Productivists wanted to eliminate easel painting. Soon after, he went back to painting landscapes, and in 1933 and 1935 he traveled to Armenia where the offered lot was painted. He exhibited throughout the world in the 1920s, proving his success at home and abroad. In 1938, the NKhVD repressed and executed him, but in 1957 he was posthumously rehabilitated. In the opinion of Tatiana Zeliukina, the offered lot can be related to a series of drawings and paintings produced while Drevin was living with his wife Nadezhda Udaltsova in the village of Nork in Armenia in 1933. The artist has recently been the subject of two exhibitions, Risunki Aleksandra Drevina in 2006 at the Graphic Art Museum and Aleksandr Drevin i Nadezhda Udaltsova in 2008 at the Dom Naschokina Gallery, and the book compiled by Tatiana Zeliukina Aleksandr Drevin v Museynikh sobraniyakh, Moscow, 2003.
