Description:
Heinrich Dreber, known as Franz-Dreber
(Dresden 1822–1875 Anticoli di Campagna) A Mountain Landscape in the South with a Young Woman Reading in the Shade of a Riverbank, oil on canvas, 74 x 100 cm, framed, (GS)
Provenance: Formerly the von Grunelius family, Frankfurt am Main;
Property of a South-West German noble family.
Dreber’’’’s work is a good example of the transition from the stylistic approach of the late Romantic period to a form of idealistic nature and landscape painting, a style which culminates in the works of Arnold Böcklin. We know that Dreber never painted in the open air, rather he composed his landscapes using his rich collection of nature studies. He decorated his paintings with antique and pastoral figures. The Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main owns one of Dreber’’’’s Italian landscapes which, like this work, was formerly part of the collection belonging to the Grunelius family of Frankfurt bankers.
