CATALOGUE NOTE

This charming example of an eighteenth-century family
conversation piece depicts the Rev. John Fountayne (1741-1802),
with his third wife and their eldest son. Datable to the early
1760s, it is a rare and accomplished example of the work by a
portrait painter, Bernard Downes (active 1759-1771), about whom
little biographical information is known. The Rev. John Fountayne
is depicted in his ecclesiastical bands as Dean of York and rests
his right hand on a volume of 'Sherlock's Sermons'. Published as
four volumes between 1754-58 and entitled 'Several Discourses
preached at the Temple Church', they were a compilation of the
sermons delivered by the well-known preacher, Thomas Sherlock
(1678-1761). Their popularity lasted well into the nineteenth
century and Jane Austen wrote in a letter dated, 28 Sept. 1814: "I
am very fond of Sherlock's Sermons and prefer them to almost any."
Sherlock and Fountayne were almost certainly close acquaintances;
both attended St. Catherine's Hall, Cambridge and were colleagues
at Salisbury Cathedral.
