Description:
MASON (WILLIAM)

Portrait after Sir Joshua Reynolds, R.A., and attributed to William Doughty (1757-1782), oil on canvas,

en grisaille

, half-length, holding rolled papers in his left hand,

framed, 870 x 660 mm.,

[before 1782]

Footnotes

Sir Joshua Reynolds painted William Mason, poet, artist and divine, Canon of York and friend and biographer of Thomas Gray, in the summer of 1774, for which he was paid 35 guineas and received an easel from the sitter; 'He has taken great pains with this and says it is the very best head he ever painted', Mason wrote.

A mezzotint was made of the portrait by William Doughty and it may be that the present portrait, being

en grisaille

was the one from which he worked. There is another portrait of Mason by Doughty in the National Portrait Gallery.
