Description:
KIM DORLAND (1974-) UNTITLED (LORI) oil on wood panel signed and dated 2009 on the reverse 48 ins x 36 ins; 121.9 cms x 91.4 cms Private Collection, Toronto Kim Dorland was born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver and a Master of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. Dorland’’s works render the nostalgic spaces of the artist’’s upbringing in Canada, often through a deft and distinct handling of sumptuous impasto layers and bold, broad, brush strokes. With a haunting and unexpected beauty, they draw attention to their own physicality, as well as their personal nature. Visceral and expansive, Dorland's art is fierce, eccentric and stunning. The artist’’s unique vision and colour sensibility, paired with elements of abstraction function collectively to engage the viewer and challenge notions of what is expected of representation. Dorland has exhibited globally, including shows in Milan, Montreal, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and is featured in numerous private, corporate and public collections of note including the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The artist currently lives and works in Toronto.

Kim Dorland
, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, 2014, pages 9 and 16.
Kim Dorland emerged on Canada's art scene shortly after graduating from York University with an M.F.A. in 2003. After 2005, he began the practice for which he is now known: building up his paintings with thick layers of impasto, directly from the paint tube or using knives and improvised implements, until the nodules of paint become so heavy that they sometimes require anchoring to the canvas with screws. Ever since then Dorland has been enjoying international fame as one of Canada's preeminent mid-career painters.

Note:
A painter of extremes, Kim Dorland\’\’ s artwork is an instantly recognizable fusion of intense colour, copious amounts of paint and psychological narratives. Drawing his inspiration from the likes of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, he takes the rich tradition of Canadian landscape painting and infuses it with contemporary imagery such as spectral figures that seem alienated in natural settings and colour combinations that transfix the viewer\’\’s gaze. In
Dripping Dream #2
, (2013), Dorland depicts himself sitting deep in the woods making the first brushstroke on an otherwise blank canvas of neon pink. \“This painting came from a photo of me painting outdoors at the Emma Lake workshop in 2009…I wanted to make a painting that used this experience but twisted it to give it a sense of claustrophobia and a hallucinatory feel.\”
The sitter for
Sad Girl
(2008), from Dorland\’\’s portrait series
About a Girl
, is his wife, Lori. The massive scale of the painting and the seemingly violent rendering of the subject are at first disconcerting. Viewers are left pondering the psychology behind such a depiction, but the artist insists that first and foremost, his works are about the creative process, his near obsession with colour and his powerful and intuitive relationship to paint.
Dorland studied at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design as well as York University where he received his Master of Fine Arts in 2003. His works are exhibited globally and are included in the collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; the Musee d\’\’art Contemporain de Montreal; the Glenbow Museum (Calgary); and the Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego).
