Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
Description: Buttersworth (Thomas, 1768-1828, attrib.). British Naval Shipping off Ferrol, Spain, oil on canvas, 350 x 485 mm Thomas Buttersworth was born on the Isle of Wight on 5 May 1768. Like many other marine painters, not least Pocock and Smyth, Buttersworth was a seaman who recorded his experiences in paint and charcoal. Several of the 27 watercolours by him in the National Maritime Museum, London, are mounted on sheets from 18th-century printed signal and muster books. In 1795 he is documented as enlisting on board HM receiving ship Enterprise in London. He served on the Caroline during the French wars and was invalided home from Minorca in 1800. Paintings such as the Inshore Squadron off Cadiz in 1797 (National Maritime Museum, London) probably reflect events he witnessed. Following his return to London, he was appointed Marine Painter to the East India Company and added commissioned ship portraits to his already prolific output of naval battle scenes. Despite his relative success, Buttersworth exhibited few paintings during his lifetime. It was long thought that he had died in 1830 but has recently been confirmed that he was still alive in 1842, painting Queen Victorias visit to Edinburgh in that year. He died in London in November 1842. (1) Auction Details Preview Dates & Times: 5th & 6th December 9am to 7pm. Morning of sale from 9am. Description:
Description: English school. Portrait of Lady Margaret Denny, 17th c., three quarter length oil on canvas portrait (relined), showing Lady Denny with white silk ruff and sleeves holding a prayer book, 965 x 765mm (38 x 30ins), modern black wooden frame Lady Margaret Denny, wife of Sir Edward Denny (1544-1599/1600), was Maid of Honour to Queen Elizabeth I. She came from the ancient family of Edgecumbes of Mount Edgecumbe in Cornwall, her parents being Pierce Edgecumbe MP, and Margaret Luttrell, whose own mother was a descendant of Edward I, and second cousin to both Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn. Her acquaintance at court with Edward Denny led to marriage in 1583, or early the following year, and as a wedding present the Queen obtained from Richard, Bishop of London, a 21-year lease on Rectory Manor House, Bishops Stortford to be assigned to Sir Edward. Margaret Denny lived an eventful and colourful life with her husband and continued to do so long after his death. In 1642 she gave shelter to her grandsons widow (Lady Ruth Denny) and her seven children after they fled the Rebellion in Ireland. King Charles I came to Bishops Stortford to visit Margaret Denny. In recognition of her loyalty and that of her family, he gave her a charter of protection, signed and dated 19 December 1642. Margaret Denny died on 24 April 1648, aged 88.
