Edward Dodwell (1767-1832)
Mount Vesuvius, Italy
pencil and watercolour
24¼ x 39 7/8 in. (61.5 x 101.4 cm.)
Provenance
with Spink-Leger, London.
Ritchies; Canada, 3 December 1996, lot 182.
Dodwell spent some twenty-five years of his life in Italy. For much of this time he lived in Naples, in the shadow of Vesuvius whose drama and enormity he captures in the present watercolour.
This was one of five large watercolours by Dodwell to be sold in 1996. Of these, two are comparable in terms of scale and engagement with the complex geology of mountains, craters and caves: A view from a Katabathra, Acrophia and Cave of Pan, near Vari.
Dodwell was also an archaeologist and published several volumes on Greece, illustrated with fine drawings and watercolours such as A Gateway in the Turkish Wall around Athens, sold Christie's, London, 12 July 1994, lot 9, published in Views in Greece, 1821.

Description:
edward dodwell british, 1767-1832 bazaar, athens inscribed on original mount: parthenon - acropolis/market day in the bazaar of athens/coffee-house/p. 1805/cop. watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour 39.5 by 56 cm., 15 1/2 by 22 in. dodwell was one of the earliest british visitors to greece and this rare watercolour, which has remained in the possession of a descendant of the artist and is in excellent condition, is one of his most significant works. he was educated at trinity college, cambridge and graduated as a b.a. in 1800. he travelled in greece in 1801 and again in 1805 and 1806, some of the time with the archeologist sir william gell. the present watercolour dates from his 1805 tour after he arrived in greece from messina in february. greece was under turkish occupation at the time and in athens he gained access to the acropolis, which was being used as a fortress, by bribing the governor and soldiers. lord elgin had begun to remove the parthenon frieze and dodwell was shocked by what he saw: 'everything relative to this catastrophe was conducted with an eager spirit of insensate outrage, and an ardour of insensate rapacity, in opposition not only to every feeling of taste but to every sentiment of justice and humanity.' he travelled throughout greece and collected coins and vases, most of which are now in the munich glyptothek. from 1806, dodwell lived mainly in italy and married theresa, the daughter of count giraud. he published several books on greece including 'views in greece, from drawings by e. dodwell' in 1821, for which the present watercolour was engraved, 'a classical and topographical tour through greece' (1819) and 'views and descriptions of cyclopian or pelasgic remains in greece and italy.... from drawings by e. dodwell' (1834). provenance: by descent from the artist to the present owner engraved: by t. fielding for 'views in greece'' published by rodwell and martin, london 1821 as 'bazar, athens'
