Description:
GERMAN, LATE 17TH CENTURY (1682-1745) - AN IVORY ECCE HOMO -
Mis:
Christ with his head turned to dexter, His bound hands crossed over His chest, with a cloak billowing behind Him
CATALOGUE NOTE
The treatment of the rather stylized elongated and sharply carved eyes as well as the well defined expressive lips, can be closely compared to the treatment of the facial features in an ivory statuette of Henri IV of France in the V&A Museum (Theuerkauff (1966), fig.26). The attention to texture and detail typical of Dobbermann's work is also seen in the present figure and in particular the hair and rope.. . Jacob Dobbermann was born in Danzig. From 1716 until certainly 1729 and possibly even to his death, he was working for the protestant Landgraf of Hesse Kassel as amber carver to the court.. . RELATED LITERATURE. Theuerkauff (1966), pp. 72-78, fig. 26; Theuerkauff (1994), pp.26-32
