Lot number: 23
Lot 23: Mary Dillwyn (1816-1906) - Two Studies of Domestic Fowl, late 1840s or early 1850s

Two salt prints, corners trimmed, mounted on a folio album leaf together with a pale salt print by John Dillwyn Llewelyn [ Bittern, shot at Penllergare ] and (pasted over a blank portion of the Bittern) an albumen print of a memorial tablet to John Henry Vivian (d.1855), Swansea M.P, 7.2 x 8.3 cm (2 7/8 x 3 ¼ in) and 6.7 x 9 cm (2 5/8 x 3 ½ in) Mary Dillwyn of Penllergare, Swansea, was the youngest sister of John Dillwyn Llewelyn, and almost certainly the first woman photographer in Wales. Another example of the two White Poland hens is present in one of the Llewelyn albums at Swansea Museum (SWASM:SM 1987.844.41). The second study appears to be unrecorded although one of the two Mary Dillwyn albums in the National Library of Wales includes several comparable subjects of similar size.
