Portrait of an Oriental man,
oil on canvas, 53.5 x 44.5 cm, in a gilded Empire frame
Provenance:
Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 19.10.1993, lot 176;
German private collection.
The Saxon court painter, Dietricy was referred to by Johann Joachim Winckelmann as the “Raphael of landscape painting”. This characterful head exhibits the influence of the Rembrantesque Oriental heads by the Tiepolo family, which Dietricy got to know in Dresden in 1742.
