Description:
Cesare Auguste Detti (Italian, 1847-1914) Henri III reçu par le doge Muccinigo au palais Foscari Oil on canvas 37-1/2 x 57 inches (95.3 x 144.8 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: Cesar Detti Paris PROPERTY FROM THE FAMILY OF LAMAR HUNT, DALLAS, TEXAS EXHIBITED: Paris Salon, 1882. LITERATURE: A. M. de Bélina, Nos peintres dessinés par eux mêmes, Paris, 1883, n.p. The career of Italian-born painter Cesare Detti was in full flourish at the time he painted this monumental costume spectacle of a historic Renaissance event set in Venice. He had settled permanently in France, found a sympathetic Parisian dealer, enjoyed the lavish patronage of American railroad tycoon William Henry Vanderbilt, and got married and started a family. Detti's painting depicts a scene from the elaborate state visit made by Henry III, the imminent King of France, to the Venetian Republic in July of 1574. The visit offered both the newly minted monarch and the Venetian Republic an opportunity for gaining prestige. Henry presented himself in many ceremonies as the new French ruler, whereas Venice used the visit for cultivating its traditional image as defender of the Christian faith. He was received by Doge Alvise Mocenigo on the island of Murano, and then conveyed, together with the Doge, the papal legate, princes and ambassadors, to the Piazza San Marco in the heart of Venice aboard the Bucintoro (a gilded state galley). Flanked by fifteen galleys and thousands of other boats, and accompanied by pealing bells, music and gun salutes, the king's corteo turned into the Grand Canal and brought the king to Ca' Foscari, which had been prepared as quarters for Henry and his entourage. This is the setting Detti chose for his scene, with Henry III and the Doge forming the center of the painting, which contains some 60 figures in all. The presentation of the city to Henry III encompassed a traditional schedule of entertainment, including regattas, theater performances, concerts, a banquet, a ball, and sightseeing. As one writer wittily remarked, "Henry's visit to the Doge's territory makes it a little hard to remember that the basic purpose of his visit was to ask the Doge to lend him 100,000 scudi, without interest. However, the soon-to-be king was the only thing standing between the Doge and the Spanish Empire." This painting was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1882. It is unknown whether Detti produced it as a specific commission. HID01801242017
