Description:
Jean Baptiste Deshays (Colleville 1729-1765 Paris) A young woman holding a book, bust-length, said to be MadameDeshayes oil on canvas, oval 23 7/8 x 19 5/8 in. (60.6 x 49.9 cm.) Literature M. Sandoz, Jean-Baptiste Deshays, Paris, 1977, pp. 96, 108, 155,nos. 104A and 205. A. Bancel, Jean-Baptiste Deshays, Paris, 2008, pp. 44, 165-166, no.P.139, pl. P.139. Lot Notes A young Woman Holding a Book, is a portrait of Jeanne ElisabethVictoire Boucher (1735-c.1772), the first daughter of FrançoisBoucher and later Deshays' wife. A small replica (52 x 44 cm.) ofthe present painting figured in the Marczell de Nemes sale,Amsterdam, 13 November 1928, and an inferior version was sold atSotheby's, London (1 November 1991, lot 360) as the work of a'Follower of François Boucher'. Interestingly, the catalogue inwhich the latter painting appeared noted that it had previouslybeen attributed to Deshays. It is very likely the present painting that appeared in the 1791sale catalogue of Mme. Basan's collection (op. cit.), since thedescription of the painting and its dimensions match the presentcanvas almost exactly. It is also possible that it appeared, asLaing has suggested, in a sale two decades earlier of property fromthe estate of Pierre-Antoine Baudouin, the miniaturist who hadmarried Boucher's second daughter, Marie-Emilie. Deshays and hiswife married in 1758, and his premature death followed seven yearslater; we can presume that this portrait was executed around 1760,when Jeanne-Elisabeth was 25 years old, a dating which also accordswith the painting's style.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Deshays exhibited a painting of this subject in 1751 at the Ecole de l'Académie and another one at the Salon in 1763.1 Neither composition has survived in full and Sandoz suggests that the few related drawings and prints, which he lists under the earlier work, may in fact be for the later version. The present study, dated 1762, could be preparatory for the Salon painting. A print of the Head of Potiphar's Wife by Bonnet after Deshays shows some differences in expression, dress and position from the figure in the present study.2 Deshays was a pupil of Collin de Vermont, Jouvenet and Restout and then of Boucher, whose daughter he married. His work was much admired by his contemporaries but his early death cut short his promising career. 1. Marc Sandoz, Jean-Baptiste Deshays, Paris 1977, pp. 62-64, no. 5 and p. 87, no. 77-1 2. Sandoz, op. cit., p. 30, fig. 14
