Signed and dated on back: P. Della Vedova and 1870 A carved white marble sculpture by Pietro Della Vedova depicts a young girl bathing, clutching a tree branch as she dips a foot in a pool and holds her garment demurely at her waist. Pietro Della Vedova was born in Prima San Giuseppe, and received his initial training as a stuccoist in Munich. In 1853, he entered the Munich Academy of Fine Arts where he became a student of Wichmann. A year later he returned to Italy and trained at the Accademia Albertina in Torino, where he later became a Professor of Sculpture. In 1868, he produced for the City of Turin a monumental sculpture for the Carignano Palace, and in 1871, produced the Toesca Garbiglietti monument as well as a number of elaborate mausoleums in the Turin cemetery. In Hungary he carved a statue of Cardinal Palma. Della Vedova also produced sculptures depicting the likenesses of Charles-Emmanuel I, Bishop Ghilardi, and numerous members of the Italian royal family. An entire museum, Gipsoteca Pietro Della Vedova, houses plaster casts, sketches and models of Pietro Della Vedova's works.
