CATALOGUE NOTE
The versatile and prolific Dell'Acqua painted both oils and watercolors, with equal success in each medium, throughout his career. The artist was particularly admired for his large-scale multi-figure historical subjects, executed in great detail, which recall the work of Paul Delaroche and Emile Jean Horace Vernet and was deeply influnced by his teacher Louis Gallait, recognized as the leader of the juste millieu Romantic style. However, Dell'Acqua is equally well-known for his half-length and full-length portraits of women wearing traditional Spanish, Greek, or Oriental costumes. While the artist never traveled to these countries, he was fascinated by the regional dress, recounting the colors, cloths and decorative embellishments with astonishing precision. In the present work the multiple rich tones and textures of the fabric, from finely woven silks to embroidered slippers, coupled with the warm gleam of elaborate gold jewelry worn by the beauty evidences Dell'Acqua's high level of technique. The addition of a spinning top held forth in the woman's hand adds an intriguing temporal element to the work as the finely carved object lists just slightly ready to topple at any moment. An allegorical interpretation is also invited as the spinning top long symbolized fertility in Ancient civilizations.
