Description:
Lot 89: Cornelis G. Decker, River Landscape with Farmstead, 17th C. Description: Oil on wood Haarlem, Netherlands, 17th century Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker (c.1618-1678) - Landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age Monogrammed lower right 'C D [...]' The work is registered in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), Den Haag, under the number 10429 and listed under the full title 'Rivierlandschap met boerderij op rechteroever (river landscape with farmstead on the right bank)' Original exhibition frame from 1937 Dimensions: 40.8 x 35.4 cm Provenance: Christie's (Vienna), auction 29/10/1996 - 30/10/1996, lot 40, with ill. in colors; private collection, Sweden Decker painted primarily river and canal landscapes, often with plain farmhouses or dilapidated huts on the banks; the auction record for one of his paintings is currently set at €84,000 The present painting is a work by the Dutch painter Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker. The latter created many such river views and landscapes, often with ruined architecture bathed in a differentiated play of light. The artist's finely executed works testify to his keen interest in the materiality of old and weathered objects and buildings. In contrast he often sets an atmospheric light and bright color scheme. The painting is monogrammed lower right 'CD [...]'. Inspection under UV-light reveals small retouchings to the sky and the house, as well as larger retouching to the boat. In the sky upper left there is a trace (approx. 3 x 3 cm) of an attempt to clean the surface. Partially the edges are rubbed, the varnish is slightly dirty on the surface due to age. There is a fine crack in the wood panel on the lower right. The frame is in good condition with light wear. The framed work measures 65.8 x 60.1 cm, the panel measures 40.8 x 35.4 cm. Provenance: Stenmans Konstsalong, Gösta Herman Stenman (1888-1947), Stockholm, Schweden (acquired in 1937); Gallery Maria Gillhausen, Munich (acquired between 1939 and 1943); Galerie Maria Almas-Dietrich, Munich (acquired on January 13, 1944 ); Acquired by Adolf Hitler in 1944 for the planned 'Führermuseum' in Linz; Linz no.: 3237/1125; May 1945: Seizure of the storage in Altaussee by the U.S. Army; 17 July 1945: Registration in the Central Collecting Point Munich MCCP, Munich no.: 4562; January 18, 1952 restitution to the Bundesdenkmalamt Salzburg by MCCP, thereafter stored in Kartause Mauerbach near Vienna; October 29, 1996 auctioned by the State of Austria in the so-called Mauerbach Benefit Sale at Christie's: Christie's (Vienna), auction 29/10/1996 - 30/10/1996, lot 40., with ill. in colors since then private collection, Sweden Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker (c. 1618-1678) Between 1635 and 1678 Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker was active as a landscape painter in his home town of Haarlem. He was a pupil of Salomon van Ruysdael. Decker painted mainly farmhouses on riverbanks and under trees, wooded areas and the like. At first sight his works are idyllic sceneries, but often infused with more sinister and mysterious overtones as found in the works by his contemporary Jacob van Ruisdael. Artists such as Jan Wijnants and Philips Wouwerman further influenced Decker. For the figural scenes within his paintings, he sometimes collaborated with artists such as Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) and Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685). From 1643 onwards Decker was a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. (tfa)
