Description:
Auke de Vries (1937) Sketches for Maasbeeld (1983) 2 pencil and fineliner drawings on (tracing) paper, framed together, each 21x29,5 cm Provenance: Nouvelles Images, The Hague. Exhibited: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, 'Kunst uit huis V: collectie Ron Klein Breteler', 24.5 - 23.8.2009. Measuring 182 metres in length the Maas Sculpture is an immense art work, but viewed against the vast scale of the Willemsbrug it appears to be a modest and playful arabesque. It is autonomous yet tailored to its site, like Auke de Vries\’ other sculpture in the city at the Netherlands Architecture Institute. The history of the Maas Sculpture began when De Vries was asked for his advice about placing an art work alongside the Willemsbrug. There followed a long discussion about the embankments, water, space and urban quality. De Vries did not initially participate in the open competition to design a work of art for the bridge. But when he was invited to submit a proposal and was allowed a year to conceive his plan, he agreed. (Source: oud.sculptureinternationalrotterdam.nl/) The forces of nature do their work: the \‘washing line\’, as the sculpture quickly became known in Rotterdam, sags, the transverse beams and rods pull it sideways, the steel balls dangle from the strong steel cable. The sculpture links the Willemsbrug with a leftover pier from the now dismantled railway bridge. The sculpture draws its power from the interplay between the river, the bridge and the embankment.

CATALOGUE NOTE
In the 1970s, Auke de Vries started to make smallthree-dimensional models intended as an aid in his graphic work. They soon started to lead a life of their own, developing intoindependent sculptures. Based on observations of reality, De Vriesphotographs and makes sketches in natural and urban environmentswhich he transforms into abstract images. After 1980, De Vriesliterally began to explore space, suspending separate elementsingeniously in the air. In his works he creates a feeling oftension, combining lines, planes and volumes. A characteristic ofthe work of De Vries is that where scale and representativity arecalled for, he reacts with 'drawings' in space; abstract volumesand structures with an unpredictable, quirky presence. In additionto his commissioned work, De Vries has produced a considerable bodyof personal, autonomous sculptures that are regularly exhibitedthroughout Europe.
Auke de Vries
is for about ten years a former advisor at theRijksakademie; he curated the Rijksakademie exhibition 'Het eigengezicht' in Museum Beelden aan Zee (Scheveningen) in 1997.De Vries was presented with the Cultuurprijs by the City of TheHague (2005).
