Description:
Simon de Vlieger (Rotterdam 1600/1-1653 Weesp) A shipwreck on the cliffs in a gale oil on panel 65.7 x 99.2 cm.
Private Collection, Hesse.
Arguably the most important Dutch marine painter of the first half of the 17th century, little is known of de Vlieger's early career, although his paintings of the 1620s and 1630s reveal a clear debt to Jan Porcellis. By the 1640s he had evolved his own style, recognisable for its silvery light, cool palette and strong draughtsmanship. De Vlieger forms a link between the second and third generations of Dutch marine painters, influencing Willem van de Velde II, who worked in his studio at Weesp, as well as Hendrick Dubbels and Jan van de Cappelle (who owned numerous paintings and more than 1,300 drawings by de Vlieger), who probably also worked there.
This large-scale marine painting depicts a sea storm in which various sailing ships are caught up. The ship in the centre, having already lost its top mast, has narrowly escaped the dangerous cliffs and struggles back to open sea. It flies the Dutch flag and bears on its stern a Maan. Such depictions reminded viewers of the dangers of the overseas-trade on which the wealth of the Dutch nation was built.
Jan Kelch dates this painting to between 1642 and 1645 and compares it to other depictions of stormy seas by Simon de Vlieger, amongst others, in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan (inv. no. 1226) (written communication, October 2012).
