Description:
TOMMASO DE SIMONE (CIRCA 1805-1888) H.M.S. 'Trafalgar' becalmed in the Bay of Naples Oil on canvas Signed and dated 'De Simone 1863' (lower right) 10 x 15in. (25 x 38cm.) Originally a First Rate of 120 guns ordered in 1825 as one of five 'Saint George' class three deckers, Trafalgar was cut down to a two-decker in 1859 and fitted with Maudslay engines. When launched in 1841 her fine bust-length figurehead of Nelson was sporting a hat as, in 1843, the carvers Hellyer & Son were allowed £5.15.0 to modify the figure as the hat was fouling the bowsprit -- although interestingly the contemporary model and engravings depicted a hatless Nelson. A new figurehead, complete with hat as seen in this picture, was issued in 1859 and survives to the present day at Portsmouth Dockyard. Trafalgar only served in the Mediterranean in 1863 before becoming a Coastguard vessel at Portland, a cadet training ship (when she was re-named Boscawen ) and was broken up in 1906 after sixty-five years afloat.

Footnotes The magnificent Valhalla, 1,218 tons gross, was the only British steam yacht to carry a full ship rig and is believed by many to have been the finest example of a steam auxiliary ever built. Designed by W.C. Storey and built by Ramage & Ferguson at Leith for Captain J.F. Laycock in 1892, she is best known for her achievement of third place in the Kaiser's famous Trans-Atlantic Race of 1905 despite the competition afforded by the much faster schooners taking part. She had several owners, most notably the Earl of Crawford & Balcarres (from 1902-08), and she also did War service with the Royal Navy including a period at Limnos - in the Aegean - during the Gallipoli campaign. After the War she became a Spanish-owned fruit carrier but she was wrecked and sunk off Cape St. Vincent in 1922.

Footnotes

SY Thistle was a three-masted iron schooner built by Blackwood & Gordon in Glasgow in 1881 and was owned by the Duke of Hamilton. This painting is believed to have come from Hamilton's collection, and was subsequently purchased with other effects from his estate by Lord Rendlesham. A label verso confirms that it was hung in Rendlesham Hall, Suffolk.
